Government Official Says MoD Examining Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Told to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

An defence minister has stated that the MoD is currently investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been advised to refrain from talking about classified information in all vehicles.

Safety Guidance for Defence Staff

In a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while travelling in China-made cars.

He explained that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those secret talks in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

The revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and cause disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

This wider security situation highlights the significance of strong measures and caution in all aspects of government operations, including transport usage to discussions habits.
