British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
